The 100-plus-year-olds in a recent article in the Guardian, “Secrets of a Long Life,” https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/may/10/centenarians-secrets-for-a-long-life-cigars-gin-and-tonic-coffee-dont-die

had some interesting theories about what has helped them make it to such a ripe old age. Among their recommendations are bacon, cigars, a daily Guinness, and other surprises. I heartily agree that enjoying life without worrying too much contributes to good health. But it’s probably good genes and good luck more than anything that helped these folks make it to 100 and beyond.

Still, I’ve noticed that experts have done a 180 about some former health taboos. Red wine? Loaded with antioxidants. Dark chocolate? Ditto. Coffee? Keeps your brain sharp. Fat? Beneficial as long as it’s the right kind.

And perhaps most surprising of them all: My friend Simone told me about her doctor’s recommendation for improving her balance as she ages—wear high heels! Personally, I’ll skip that one.
